In theory no permission is needed to walk the wall, but arriving without a connected Afghan guide can cause problems and tourists are often turned back from walking the wall alone. The wall walk is isolated and I know personally of several foreigners who have been attacked whilst on the hike, including the late and great Nando Rollando (…founder of Alpistan) who was put into a coma after thieves smashed rocks against his head.
